This plant resembles a small sunflower and is in the
sunflower or composite family. A composite flower is made up
of many flowers found on the head or disk at the top of the
stem. The ray or edge flowers have yellow petals that border
the head. The fleshy leaves are a light green on top and
have a dense hairy underside. The plant grows to about a
foot tall near the end of the summer.
This plant is used when very young and mixed with other
plants for greens. The salads using this plant are made by
mixing a variety of plants such as fireweed, pamiutuq
; roseroot,
iviqluk; beach greens,
achaaqluk; or pink plumes, kaghapchuk.
Cooked greens are made by mixing these same plants and
cooking them with water for about ten minutes. The name of
this plant has been forgotten or was never known. It is a
less commonly used plant, which could account for the
absence of it's name.
