No Niggers In Our
Town!
One day while the V.P.S.O. was on a
flight from Bethel to Pilot Village he started experiencing
mechanical difficulties. He radioed back to Bethel but they couldn't
understand what he was saying so he called over to Pilot Village to
say that his plane was going down.
We called over to Bethel by phone and
told them a plane had gone down. One elder who was listening on the
VHF told the search and rescue team that the plane went down around
Toklik camp, not far from Ohagamiut. When they got there they found
the plane was on fire and the V.P.S.O. was lieing on the snow dead.
His head was cracked open and his body was covered with blood. They
called over to Toklik to call Pilot Village about the
accident.
A couple of weeks after the accident
at a meeting the mayor announced that we were going to get a new
V.P.S.O. Everyone on the council wanted to know who he was and what
he looked like. The mayor told us that we'd see when he arrived on
the first flight in the morning.
When the V.P.S.O. arrived everyone
went to check on how he looked. When I first saw him I thought he was
wearing a face mask because I couldn't see his face. But when I got
closer I noticed that he wasn't wearing a face mask at all. His skin
was a different color!
Later on in the evening two kids and
a woman came in on the evening flight, and they were black too.
People gossiped about it and didn't want to socialize with them
because they were so different from us.
Early in the morning the next day
when the new kids went to school nobody wanted to sit by them because
they were a different color and acted differently. When the new boy,
Charlie, moved over to the boys' table, one by one the local boys
moved away from him. He started to cry, and left the classroom and
went to the principal's office. The principal then came into the room
and asked us what was going on. Then during lunch break everyone
called him a baby because of what he did.
Right after school, Skip, one of the
local bullies, went up to Charlie and punched him. Charlie went home
crying. His dad, Willy, then went over to Skip's parents and asked
them what was going on. Skip told him he didn't like Charlie because
he was a different color than him! Willy got pissed off and went out
the door. Right after that Charlie's big brother, Alex, beat up Skip
really bad.
The Traditional Council then called
the State Troopers the next day, and they said they would come out
ASAP and pick up the whole family. When they were leaving the airport
everyone had signs that said, "NO NIGGERS IN OUR TOWN!" Willy and his
family were all crying when they left because of what the town did.
They never went back there again.
