So
Scared!
"In 1978 I asked my husband Nick if
he would like to go out camping. We both decided that we would head
up the river toward 12 Mile Slough to do some moose hunting. It was
September 9, and we all got ready and loaded our boat. Then we were
on our way. It took us approximately two hours to get to our
designated campsite because of the big load that we had. We then
unloaded our boat and made camp. Then Nick and my two sons, Tim and
Tom, set out a fish net a ways up the river. While I was patiently
waiting for their return I heard a noise coming from in the woods
right behind where I was sitting. I thought that I heard my husband
calling me. Then I heard a stick break and I went to see if it was my
husband. Without knowing it, I walked right up to a big bull moose. I
got so scared I didn't know what to do. Then I started to walk
backwards toward the camp. As I was walking, I saw that the bull
moose was walking right after me. The moose was starting to pick up a
little speed and I got even more frightened and I turned around and
walked faster. I was so scared to look back, but I knew that the
moose was still right behind me because I heard his antlers hitting
the willows. Just as I finally got back to camp I saw Tim standing
there with his rifle pointing right at me. I got even more frightened
because I thought I'd seen him go with my husband and Tom. He told me
to get out of the way so he could get a good shot. So I jumped out of
the way, and with one shot the moose was out cold. About an hour
later my husband and my son Tom came back with another moose, so now
we had two!"
