see which one was the biggest and which could catch another animal the fastest. All the animals were excited about it except the wolf. He was so small he couldn't catch much food for himself. He only caught lemmings, mice, and voles. And when the bigger animals caught bigger game, the wolf used to steal food from the bigger animals.
The wolf was so ashamed of is size and the way he lived his life. He wished he was bigger than the foxes and dogs so that most of the animals would look up to him and think that he was a great and powerful animal.
The contest was only a week and and half away and the wolf was very worried. He was afraid he would lose all his friends. So even though he was scared, he went to a powerful medicine man to ask for his help.
The medicine man agreed to help the wolf only if the wolf proved to him that he really needed the help. The wolf was confused and he asked,
"What could I do to show you that I really need your help?"
The medicine man replied, "You have to run for two whole days non - stop. Now, I trust you not to cheat, because if you do you will be the way you are
So the next day the wolf got ready and then started running. He really wanted to stop but he kept what the medicine man told him in his mind. He didn't want to stay the way he was forever.
After running for two whole days he walked back to the medicine man's hut and told him what he had done. The medicine man was so surprised. He had thought the wolf would fail him at this test. But he didn't. So the medicine man did what he promised and made the wolf bigger, stronger and faster.
Later, during the contest, the wolf came in second place, and he was really proud of himself.
So it is that up to this day wolves are big, strong, smart and fast, all because a small fox-size wolf proved himself worthy to a powerful medicine man.
