Before Fishing
Started
For William Andrew
Everybody was getting ready for fishing doing
odds and ends, mending nets, and wondering what the fish prices were
going to be. When fishing got started everyone was annoyed about fish
prices, but after a couple of king openings everybody made enough to
pay their bills and let their money flow around Marshall. So
basically everybody was happy when we got about six king
openings.
Then after the last king opening at the end of
June Willie went fire fighting and he was sent to McGrath, about five
hundred miles away from home. He was part of sixteen crews, and they
were in spike camp B. All the fire fighters had to do some physical
work for fourteen hours a day and on the fourth of July they worked
for sixteen hours. It was the longest and the toughest day the fire
fighters had and they had to hike three to five miles a day. His crew
had to stay together all the time and after two weeks he felt like he
could do anything, that he was no longer a greenhorn and that he had
become a real fire fighter. He and his crew called themselves "HOT
SHOTS"
After two weeks the fire was contained and he
and his crew were sent home. By then they were all excited to go
home. They were getting tired of eating meals ready to
eat.(MRE'S)
When he got home, fall fishing hadn't started,
but even though fish prices weren't too good, since he needed to make
more money, he decided to go fishing. When fishing was all over he
was happy about the amount of money he made, and he is looking
forward to next year's season again.
