"Fire fighting with Frank Amouak and
Wesley Pitka"
Second Fire
The second fire they went to was 12 miles out
of McGrath, at a place called Takotna. Thug left Marshall at 1:30
A.M. and landed in McGrath at 3:30 A.M. They staged in McGrath from
3:30 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. Then they took off and got to Talcotna at
11:30 P.M. The whole crew camped in Takotna, then they left there at 3:30
P.M. and camped two and a half miles northeast of Takotna. They
started a regular camp there.
The fire that they fought was 13,700 acres in extent.
There were 17 crews working on the fire from three different base camps.
The highlight of the
whole trip was
backburning. Backburning means cutting a fire line, then burning back
towards the fire source.
The second most exciting thing was the bears
which were always bothering the camp. The bears bothered Spike camp A
the most because there was a guy there that hid MRE's under his tent.
That was why a bear went under the tent to get it, because it smelled
the food.
When we returned we took off at 9:00 A.M. and
got to Takotna at 9:15 A.M. We left Takotna at 3:30 P.M. and got to
Marshall at 5:00 P.M. And that was the end of it.
