Mary's Summer
Vacation
What did I do this summer? Let's see
I worked at Bering Sea Fisheries, went out hunting a couple of times,
babysat for my sister and for my cousin, and stayed home. Anyway,
when I was working at Bering Sea Fisheries, I worked for more than 12
hours a day. During the first fishing period we worked all morning
and all evening cleaning fish. And when we were through we had to
pack the fish and that took us about two more hours. Sometimes I
wished I wasn't working, but then that was the only way I was making
any cash.
When
fishing season was over I went out hunting with my sister and her
boyfriend. We went to Flat Island where there were people hunting a
baby seal. I was excited at first, but when they started hitting it
with so many spears and harpoons I wasn't so pleased anymore. The
poor seal was so helpless. I choked up but held it back. Later I
whispered, "Quit hitting it." One of my friends smiled at me. And
later that day he laughed and asked me why I said,"Quit
hitting it." I just ignored him and started to eat my hamburger
helper. Later that day we thought we saw a Mukluk (Bearded seal), but
it was only a log. There were two other boats out there, and they
thought the log was a Mukluk (Bearded seal) too.
The other time I went out hunting was
with my cousin and his friend. That time we didn't see anything. The
other guy who went with us though said he saw an Issurugik (Spotted
seal) and some beluga whales. Later on we went to Issurituli and
hunted for mice. When we finally started for home the time was 11:30
P.M., and we reached home at 12:25 PM. Truly a full day, and a full
summer.
