My Summertime Tail
This year the commercial fishing season was poor, but I had a lot of fun. During the first opening I had trouble because of the high water. The water level made our fishing spot look different. Our net got stuck in shallow water on our first two drifts, and we wasted about one hour in all. We just had five hours left in the opening, enough for five full drifts and one short drift. On our third attempt we drifted a little below the place we kept getting stuck at. We finally had a good drift, and we caught about one quarter of a tote. At the end of the opening we had about a tote of Kings and three or four Chums. Then we delivered them to Shenk's boat which was parked in the slough. We didn't make that much money in that opening. I was getting paid 15% and I only made about a hundred dollars. After we sold our fish we went home and crashed out.
The second opening came about 2 days later. It was
better than the
first one about one and a half to two totes of Kings.
The best opening was the third opening. In 12 hours
we caught over two totes of Kings. Then we delivered and went back and caught
almost two more totes. If we had had a bigger outboard motor we would have
caught more. I made over a thousand dollars in that opening alone. But after
that opening fishing got very poor. That is when I started going swimming
and rod and reeling which I did until the water got cold. Then when the geese
came around I started going goose hunting.
On the 28th of August I went goose hunting with Charley
Evan. He brought me, Loots, Greg, and Andrew White. It was a lot of fun even
though the only person who caught any was Andy. Greg was a threat to baby
ducks. He caught about five or six baby ducks, but he missed really low flying
cranes. One really exciting thing that happened was when Loots and I tipped
over while we were in Charlie's canoe. I freaked out. One moment I was sitting
in the canoe and the next minute I was under the canoe. Loots swam to shore
and I pushed the canoe to shore. Boy were we wet. I guess my summer wasn't
that bad after all.
