This summer Ellen Alstrom worked at the
Maserculiq fish processing plant. She and Eski Cooper worked
together. She worked as a bookkeeper and had to figure out the total
hours of all the workers and do the payrolls for them too. She also
did other paper work, including the fishermen's bills. When an
opening was over she would help the fishermen find out the total
amount of money they would be getting. She also would give them
advances if they needed them.
Ellen worked under Lloyd Stastanski who
operated the fish plant during the summer. The plant sold its fish to
Whitney Sea Foods in Anchorage. At times she would work an average of
8 to 9 hours a day but sometimes she would work longer or shorter.
The longest she worked was 12 hours, and the shortest she worked was
only four hours. She worked a month during that fishing season, from
June 15 to July 15. Every day she had to be at work by 9:00 A.M. All
that month she was very busy taking care of the bills and paper work,
and at the end of the season she cleared all the accounts. And that's
what she did during her job.
