Roberta's First Time
Fishing!
"Fishing for the first time with my
partner, Walter Pitka, was fun because I actually enjoyed it. It was
a new experience for me because I got to learn how to drive a boat.
My partner taught me how to drive while casting out the net. Pretty
scary, because it was difficult for me, especially when I was close
to the bank. I was supposed to make a straight line, but instead I
made the shape of an S. It was a challenge for me."
"The scariest part was when Walter
and I were drifting. The engine hit a strong underwater current,
which made the boat turn half way around. I panicked because I did
not know what was going on. My partner didn't tell me about
underwater currents. Part of fishing is to know where the channels
are, and for a first time fisherwoman it's hard to know because the
channels change every year."
"The funniest part of this years
fishing was when Fred, Walter, Sophie Ann and I stopped on a sand bar
to wait for the 9 o'clock opening. While we were waiting, all of us
walked on the sand bar to check around. While we were walking we were
attacked by terns. We found several eggs lieing on the ground. After
seeing them we talked about what a good breakfast we would have had
if we had robbed the nest. We also told some jokes and funny stories.
One story was about a fisherman who jumped out of his boat because a
bear jumped in.Can you picture that? Being
chased out of your own boat by a bear that just wanted to go to the
other side of the river?!.
"To make it short. The whole fishing
season was pretty poor, but the experience was incredible! I'm really
looking forward to another fishing opening (if there is
one!)."
