Weekends Back and
Forth
"This summer when the days got
longer, at the end of May and early June, after the ice broke up at
Kipnuk, I took a break from my job in Bethel and went to Kipnuk to
get ready for commercial herring fishing. It usually takes me one to
two days to get everything ready for the fish opening in the
Kuskokwim Bay.
While I wait for the opening, I take
my time and enjoy the warm, long days, and go out with friends and
reminesce about my younger days. Either that, or I go hunting bird
eggs.
After herring fishing was over, I
cleaned the boat before I went back to Bethel to work at Yute Air.
After a week or two, I headed back to Kipnuk on a weekend to try my
luck fishing for halibut. I usually go back and forth from work in
Bethel to Kipnuk to enjoy the short weekends fishing and hunting
there. Depending on the weather, we have to travel 10-15 miles out on
the bay to look for a hot spot. This summer I caught a total of three
halibut."
