Matt's
Childhood
I never dreamed I would be a mother
of four children. Moses and I got married, September 3,1978. A year
after we were married, Matthew was born. Moses and I were very proud
to have a son. Matthew was named after my cousin who had passed away
a few years before. He was a toy to us. We enjoyed him, because he
was a good baby. He only cried when he was hungry, wet or just
getting up from sleep.
But there were times when he got sick
and that would really scare me, because I didn't know what was making
him sick. I didn't know how to look for symptoms or signs of what was
bothering him, and I used to panic and call his grandmas. They would
come to calm me down and to show me what signs to look for. But after
two years I got better at recognizing the symptoms, and the Public
Health nurse taught me how to care for him when his temperature got
too high.
Matthew was a good toddler too, he
learned very fast about his world. He also trusted me. The only time
he made me worry was when he started going out side on his own. To
this day he still worries me.
