The UAF Alaska Native Studies Department seeks to provide the student with a keen awareness of the scope, richness, and variety of Alaska Native cultural heritages, and a series of critical perspectives on the contemporary Native experience in the plural society of North America. The student's academic program will be interdisciplinary as it is built upon a combination of appropriate courses currently offered in other specialized disciplines and of an integrated set of core courses offered by the ANS Department.

Cultural Knowledge of Native Elders

An academic centerpiece of the Alaska Native Studies B.A. is its Elders-in-Residence program. Prominent tradition bearers from the Native community are invited to reside on the Fairbanks campus for extended periods each semester. Under the direction of Native Studies faculty, students enrolled in ANS 401 receive direct instruction from these distinguished elders. The course is designed to maximize student-elder contact inside and outside the classroom to learn about Native life, past and present.

Funded by the Improving America's Act of 1994, AKRAC actively promotes local programs and policies that support learning for students most in need of assistance. By providing comprehensive training and technical assistance services to Alaska's school districts, SERRC, along with its AKRAC partners, the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development and the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, continue to positively affect thousands of students and educators throughout the state. Indian Education Program (http://www.akrac.k12.ak.us/AKRAC/Programs/indian.html) addresses the unique needs of Alaska Native (AN) and American Indian (AI) students (contact: Julie Staley, Indian Education Coordinator at julies@serrc.org).

The Alaska Staff Development Network is a statewide partnership, initiated in 1983 that includes Alaska's 53 school districts, the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, NEA-Alaska, the Alaska Council of School Administrators, Alaska's universities and colleges, the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory, as well as a number of education professional associations and corporate sponsors. We believe that the unique professional growth needs of Alaska's teachers and administrators can be best met by strengthening collaborative relationships among these groups. Approximately 5,000 Alaska educators from all Alaskan school districts take part in more than 200 face-to-face and distance learning training activities sponsored by the Network each year. Educators from Network sponsoring districts and organizations receive a significant discount on fees for Network programs.
