Newhalen, AK 99606

The objective is to incorporate aspects of the local culture into the school's curriculum. Of paramount importance to the Noghelingamiut (Newhalen People) is the discovery and preservation of their history. Recent archeological finds and oral traditions tell us that there are at least three localities of significance in the Newhalen area. The potential loss of both the oral historical knowledge and archeological resources is a matter of great concern to the village. Newhalen students, the Newhalen Tribal Council and Iliamna Lake area village elders have been involved in this project for the past three years. Two classes were created: Cultural Heritage and Video Editing/Multimedia. The three major areas of content have been archeological survey fieldwork, collections of oral histories, and identification of photograph collections. In the future we hope to complete a national register nomination for significant sites and begin community planning for the protection, preservation and management of identified sites.
