This HPLC program is a comprehensive effort to help schools serving low-income students in Alaska become places where all students can achieve at high levels. The current project site is Southwest Region School District and will serve the schools of Aleknagik, Clarks Point, Ekwok, Koliganek, Manokotak, New Stuyahok, Portage Creek, Togiak, and Twin Hills. The Project uses an action-research approach to identify a repertoire of strategies that will help South West Region schools improve and sustain that improvement over time.

In the summer of 2001 AASB began it's Alaska Initiative for Community Engagement (Alaska ICE). The initiative is intended to realize the AASB Board of Directors goals for Child Advocacy and Community Engagement. Our board has charged us to provide Alaskans, at the local level, with the tools and support needed to engage all sectors of the community in educating and nurturing children and youth. Asset building is heavily embedded in the Alaska ICE plan.

The Alaska Job Corps Center provides training to 250 students in a residential campus setting. The center is located on a 20-acre campus near downtown Palmer.? Our campus has dormitories for males and females.? There are usually four students per room.? Counselors and residential advisors are available 24 hours a day to provide support.? Each dorm has a lounge with a TV and pay phone for student use.
