Students spend about 10 days in Juneau, one week canoeing in the wilderness, and one week at the Chilkoot Culture Camp in Haines. The camp is for all middle school students, but its organizers are particularly interested in attracting Alaska Native youth. The camp is sponsored by the Juneau School District, with funding from the U.S. Department of Education, and in cooperation with LKoot Kwaan-Chilkoot Culture Camp. The camp is a great opportunity for youth in the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, but these youth might need encouragement from an adult in order to apply. Components include the Johnson/O'Malley (JOM) Program, the Summer Youth Employment Program, Before and After School Program and the In-School Youth Program. Activities focus on providing opportunities for at-risk youth to gain work skills, pre-employment training, in-school tutoring through the JOM Study Skills classes and in-school work programs. The Summer Youth Employment Program provides on-site work experience for nearly 100 youth, ages 14-21. In S.E.A.L.S. we learn about the local arts and traditions of the native groups in our area. (Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian) We use the information passed down from our elders and their stories to develop our lessons. Some of the activities we are currently working on are: fall harvest, moccasin making, beading, regalia, lineage (crest, moiety), north west coast design and Tlingit language. All of these activities have been used and practiced by our native people for centuries and continue to be used and practiced today.
