Box 169 Barrow, AK 99723 The NSBSD is committed to building a strong foundation of cultural identity, pride and esteem that supports Iñupiaq students' mental, physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual development. We strive to establish an education that is firmly grounded in Iñupiaq values, language and culture while meeting the State standards. At the elementary level, children whose parents opt to have them in the Iñupiaq Language Program, are placed in an Iñupiaq as a Second Language setting with instruction occurring for a duration of anywhere from 20-30 minutes per day. Parents who live in Barrow also have the option of placing their children in the Iñupiaq Immersion Program where instruction is delivered in Iñupiaq from preschool through third grade. Children who are in the middle school in Barrow receive instruction in the Iñupiaq language for an uninterrupted duration of 80 minutes per session alternating classes every other day. Secondary school students receive instruction as an elective. From our main office in Barrow we provide support services such as Inupiaq language materials and staff development. Inupiat Heritage Center:Organization Type: Non Profit Category: Cultural Awareness in Education Ronald H. Brower Director inupiatheritagecenter@hotmail.com http://www.nps.gov/inup/home.htm 5421 North Star Street Barrow, AK 99723 The I?upiat Heritage Center is managed by the college through an agreement with the North Slope Borough. The Tuzzy Higbee Consortium Library is located in this building as well as the North Slope Borough Inupiat History Language and Culture Commission (IHLC) the site is also used for several I?upiat studies courses and other community interest activities. The Inupiat Heritage Center was dedicated in February 1999 and houses exhibits, artifact collections, library, gift shop, and a traditional room where people can demonstrate and teach traditional crafts in Elders-in-Residence and Artists-in-Residence programs. The Federal Government does not own or manage the Center. Rather, the North Slope Borough owns it and manages it through Ilisagvik College, also based in Barrow. The Heritage Center is one of several partners, associated through New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park legislation, who participate in telling the story of commercial whaling in the United States. Park partners operate independently but collaborate in a variety of educational and interpretive programs.
