Box 190 Akiachak, AK 99551 The vision and experience of our Yup'ik Elders guides the current educational reform in our district. The Yupiit School District is instituting educational programs that have complimenting goals and foundations. One is a First Language Yup'ik Immersion Program and the other a district-wide curriculum based on Yup'ik Elders criteria for literacy. The proposes of the two initiatives are multiple; that the Yup'ik language will have more than symbolic use, meaning that it does more than recognize and identify the Yup'ik speaker as a member of the Yup'ik community; the Yup'ik language be recognized and valued as a component of cultural literacy as well as a viable and modern method of communication; the literacy discontinuities between the school and the community be lessened with the use of a curriculum based in student?s background; the academic achievement of students rise; and student sense of self-worth and identify is increased, resulting in reduced socially dysfunctional behaviors.
