The purpose of Alaska Native Studies at Sheldon Jackson College is to increase the number of Native people receiving college credits and graduating from college, to increase the understanding of Native culture and contemporary Native issues, and to increase mutual understanding and acceptance among cultural groups. The program provides student advising and counseling to promote Native student success in college, and academic course work on Native culture, contemporary issues, and cross-cultural communications. It also co-sponsors the Village Management Institute, which is a summer program at Sheldon Jackson College that is designed to strengthen the management skills of rural residents.
