The mission of ANRC would be to generate grants, issue scholarly reports and engage in contractual/consultative work related to northern indigenous peoples, especially those of Southcentral Alaska, in accord with UAA?s Mission and Goals. It would be directed by a University-credentialed Alaska Native scholar/researcher with administrative experience. The ANRC would be linked to the American Indian Museum of the Smithsonian Institution as a satellite research center, allowing information links and training of indigenous peoples in the areas historical research, archival work, ethnography research among other areas. Program link with the Alaska Native Studies program at UAA would facilitate Alaska Native students becoming engaged in research.

The UAF Alaska Native Studies Department seeks to provide the student with a keen awareness of the scope, richness, and variety of Alaska Native cultural heritages, and a series of critical perspectives on the contemporary Native experience in the plural society of North America. The student's academic program will be interdisciplinary as it is built upon a combination of appropriate courses currently offered in other specialized disciplines and of an integrated set of core courses offered by the ANS Department.

Cultural Knowledge of Native Elders

An academic centerpiece of the Alaska Native Studies B.A. is its Elders-in-Residence program. Prominent tradition bearers from the Native community are invited to reside on the Fairbanks campus for extended periods each semester. Under the direction of Native Studies faculty, students enrolled in ANS 401 receive direct instruction from these distinguished elders. The course is designed to maximize student-elder contact inside and outside the classroom to learn about Native life, past and present.

Its purposes are (a) to provide students with an educational experience in organizing large-scale events, (b) to provide student with an opportunity to learn firsthand the rich diversity of living Native cultural traditions as seen through various art forms, (c) to promote and encourage the artistic expression of Native heritages, and (d) to provide a forum for greater public understanding of Native cultural traditions and values.
