Much communication in
business, government, or even education is initiated by
management. You are likely to speak quite freely, being
'at home' in your own position. Your client, on the
other hand, may be quite hesitant. You should remember
that he or she is not only responding to you personally, he or
she is responding to your position and the organization behind
you.
One of the symptoms of
'Type-A' behavior is the tendency to speak too quickly or to
interrupt others. You may find yourself saying something
just when the other person has finally gotten up the nerve to
open his or her mouth. Back off and let the other person
speak.
