Count to five to yourself before answering another person.

 

 

 

   
 

When you are naturally ready to speak, counting to five will guarantee a longer pause than you will consider natural.  That will allow the other person more time than they consider natural from you and suggest to them that they might speak more.

 

   
   
 

This counting to yourself will help you to start cold,, warm up (19).  Meeting on neutral turf (30) will make it easier for you to pause (32), and to wait (33).  So will avoiding coffee and other foods that make you speed up, so watch your diet (48).
