Use humor, especially about yourself, as a way of showing your own humanity.

Many economists are now saying that the best goods are the ones with the highest levels of information built into them.  That means the best quality of workmanship in manufactured goods is the best economy.  The same economists are saying for an individual the best economic activity is an enjoyable activity.

Any communication is an imposition on someone else.  Joking is one of the best ways to lighten the load of imposition in our communications.  if someone has no choice but to listen to your speech to the board of directors, it might lighten the load for them if they can enjoyit.  If the person you are listening to is finding it hard to get something across to you, showing that you have a sense of humor can lessen the risk of offending you.

In both economics and communication, there is a connection between success and enjoyability.  Be sure your jokes are at your own expense, however.  Use them as a way of lessening the controlling impact you have on others, not as a means of exercising your control over them.  Nobody likes the awful jokes of the boss that everyone feels obliged to laugh at.

Acknowledge power (12) and then joke as a natural way to start cold, warm up (19).  if you show that you have a sense of humor you will be able to be vulnerable (43) without the risk of too strong a reaction to your own vulnerability.
