Surprise
Moose
"One year, Andy Boots and I went out
hunting across from Ingigaq where we portaged over to a long lake
called Kuiguarllak. There we checked the first meadow on the left but
didn't see anything, so we paddled way inside the main lake. At that
point Andy wanted to go home, so we turned around and started heading
out. On our way out we went back through the same little meadow we
went to first. I was a being little loud because we didn't see
anything when we first checked that lake. Andy was walking ahead of
me in the portage when, all of a sudden, I saw him duck down. He
motioned to me to be quiet. I walked up to Andy as quietly as
possible. When I got to him I saw a moose drinking water. I looked
through his binoculars and saw that it was a cow moose. I told him
what the moose was, but he wanted to sneak up on the moose anyway.
Every time the moose ducked down to drink water we ran as fast as we
could towards the moose. When we were about a hundred yards away we
stopped and watched her. Then we heard something walking in the water
in the distance. It was a bull! We ran after it and shot at it. When
we ran out of bullets, we reloaded our guns as we were chasing it.
When I saw the bull's head look up, with steam coming
out of its mouth, it looked as if
Andy was going to shoot again. I told Andy it was going to fall, and
sure enough, it fell. The cow moose didn't run away until we started
walking up to the bull. We butchered the moose, packed the moose meat
over to the lake from the meadow where we loaded it into the canoe,
then we paddled to the portage where we packed the meat over to
Andy's boat on the river. We got home about 2:00 or 3:00
a.m."
