Nick's Marshall
Conference
Nick spent most of his summer
vacation in Marshall, going back and forth to his fish camp. He built
a smokehouse with the help of his dad and son Jason. He and his wife
Oxie put away dry fish for the winter. He didn't get to go to Y-1 for
commercial fishing because if he had he wouldn't have any subsistence
dry fish for this winter. "We can't eat money," he said.
He and his wife Oxie did some
traveling together during her time off from work. Once they went to
Anchorage for shopping for Katrina's birthday. They went to Bethel
for an appointment and shopping, and they also went to Akiachak and
Kwethluk for visiting and to attend the Russian Orthodox Kuskokwim
Church Conference.
The Yukon Orthodox Church Conference
was held here in Marshall. And what a busy time it was for Nick
Isaac, Nick Andrew Sr, Tommy Andrew, Andy Boots and the many other
volunteers who painted the outside and inside of the Church. They
also cleaned the campus and floor, and they cut grass around the
church. Thanks to Tom and Andy and the volunteers who finished it in
time for the conference. The Bishop seemed pleased with the
church.
After the conference Nick, Tom, Nick
Andrew Sr, Andy, Charlie Boots and some of Nick Isaac's family went
up to Ohogamiut to work on the chapel there and get it ready for the
Youth Camp. Oxie was the cook for the men. Thanks to her they had
some hearty meals so they could be energetic. Tom and Nick painted on
the inside while Nick Andrew and Charlie painted on the outside of
the chapel. Andy was their famous "grass cutter."
Youth Camp was a busy event because
they had over eighty-five kids at camp. They had classes, church
services, and many other events for them. All adults and kids were
busy. Everyone pitched in and everything went well. (Thanks to the
good Lord!) The Bishop and Deacon Yako Fisher from Kwethluk were
theirspecial guests. His Grace the Bishop got together with
the children and talked to them.
When Youth Camp was over Nick went
with Oxie to pick some berries a few times, took maqi's and did a lot
of other odds and ends. So you can see Nick's summer vacation doesn't
seem like a vacation because he was so busy most of the time. He says
that it seemed short but that he sure did enjoy it.
