Lost In The
Ocean
"On one of the trips I went on to
visit my brother, John, and his family in Tuntutuliak, on the
Kuskokwim River, I went on a fishing trip with his brother-in-law,
Andrew Frank.
We were going from Tuntutuliak to
Quinagak by boat to do some commercial fishing on the Kuskowim Bay.
There were about 20 or more other boats traveling all together. But a
trip that would normally take only 2 hours took us 12 hours! All 20
boats, including ours, got lost out in the ocean during a bad storm.
The waves were very big out there and I was very scared
because that was the first time I'd been to the ocean. I can remember
thinking, "What if I never see land again?" because all we could see
was the ocean. I can also remember thinking that as soon as fishing
was over, I'd fly from Quinagak back to Tuntutuliak!
But after we were through fishing,
the weather was calm and I decided to go back by boat after all. This
time it took us less than 2 hours to get back. That trip was the
first and last fishing trip I'd ever been on in the ocean.
