Greg Smith to Present Keynote Address at Seattle Session
Greg Smith

Gregory Smith, Professor of Teacher Education (educational policy, curriculum and instruction, place-based education, school-community relations) at Lewis & Clark College will talk about his forthcoming book (co-edited with David Gruenwald) entitled:
Place-Based Education in the Global Age: Local Diversity. Professor Smith has studied and taught place-based education for many years and has been on the cutting edge of its ongoing transition from environmental to mainstream education. We are excited to add Professor Smith to the agenda of the Seattle session of the Summer Institutes in Place-Based Education.

Ted Wright
Ted has held a variety of positions in education and tribal governance over more than twenty-five years. He is the principle associate and founder of Tribal Resources Management Planning, an educational and community development consultancy with Dr. Phillip Shortman. He has served on the faculty and in administrative roles at Penn State University, the University of Alaska Anchorage (and Fairbanks), and at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. He has long maintained an interest in place-based education principles and practices and in recent years has worked to develop place-based education training programs for teachers, administrators and community leaders. In particular, Dr. Wright has examined and conceived ways to adapt the groundbreaking place-based framework and tools developed through the work of the Alaska Rural Systemic Initiative. At the Summer Institutes, Ted will focus attention on the development of a Cultural/Community Resource Atlas for place-based education curriculum development, and on place-based education as a model for whole-school change.

Ray Barnhardt
Dr. Barnhardt will draw on many years experience in Alaska Native Education to discuss the critical role of traditional culture, place and community in modern schooling. Over the years he has presented on a far-reaching array of programs, projects and curricular tools that help teachers, policymakers, parents and others make the important connection between culturally based education and academic success as schools work to merge western and traditional knowledge. Dr. Barnhardt was instrumental in organizing and leading the Alaska Rural Systemic Initiative and its creation of the “Alaska Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools” and related publications. Moreover, he was the principal developer of the Spiral Chart place-based curriculum that now serves as the foundation for learning at the groundbreaking Effie Kokrine Charter School in Fairbanks. As primary curriculum designer for the new Fairbanks school, Dr. Barnhardt will discuss the many ways the new school has infused Alaska Native culture throughout its curriculum, pedagogy and best practices.

Co-Director Rob Wang (…teaching on the Rocky Boy Reservation)
Rob Wang
Dr. Wang has worked extensively with a variety of tribal groups throughout the Rocky Mountain Region. His primary areas of expertise include science education, environmental studies, and outdoor education. Most recently, he coordinated several NSF funded field-based science education programs for native educators and youth. In addition, Dr. Wang has been instrumental in development of Digital Storytelling as a pedagogical tool for engaging students in place-based curriculum. He is currently serving as the Science Educator and Coordinator of the BA Environmental Studies concentration for Antioch University Seattle.
