LONG EARS
There once was a rabbit who loved to eat a lot. He was chubby and
very plump and two small ears peeped out of his furry head and two
huge, long fat feet flopped along his side.
One Spring he felt he was starving to death and he really
needed something to eat. So he went out for a long quest for food. As he
was
bouncing along the open tundra, the air filled with the irresistible
smell of wild greens. He got so excited that he began to run as fast
as he could following the aromatic scent. As he was running along at
full speed he suddenly glimpsed out of the corner of his eye what
looked like two iron bars. Immediately a red light flashed inside him
and he thought, "danger! danger!"
He tried stopping but couldn't because of the wet spring grass;
instead he slid toward the iron bars of a trap which were partly
covered with the greens he was headed for. But he couldn't stop in
time to avoid the trap and the top of the rabbit's head crashed into
the two clamps.
He was caught by the ears, and even though he struggled as hard as
he could to get free, all he was doing was stretching his short ears.
He struggled very hard and it took all of his might to get free, but
as he did, his ears stretched longer and longer. When he started
pulling, his ears were only an inch away from the trap bars but when
he finally got free his ears were seven inches away from them.
The chubby little rabbit got free alright but he learned something
too--that even though he's hungry he should also be patient lest his
ears grow even longer.
