Joel's First
Moose
"One Saturday in early September I
went up to Kuik with Garrett and Russell to go camping and moose
hunting. That day I was working at Hunter's till about five o'clock.
After work we got 12 gallons of gas from Hunter's because the gas
station was closed. It took a long time for me and Garrett to get gas
because there were a lot of people at the store.
We finally pushed off at 6:30. On the
way up to Kuik we stopped to pick up a tent pole which we made out of
driftwood. Then we went up the second slough inside Kuik. We stopped
at some meadows to check if there were any moose. But there were only
fresh tracks so we pitched the tent way inside where the slough splft
into two sloughs. After the tent was up we ate, then went to check if
Charlie was working on Leslie's cabin. On our way out of the slough
we saw a moose on the bank. After I heard someone shoot (I think it
was Garrett), I shot. Then I think Russ shot next. Then Garrett then
Russ. I think Russ missed and shot in the water when our boat hit
shallow water. Then on our last shot it sounded like all of us shot
together, and the moose fell. When we got over to it I told the
others I was going to shoot it to kill it. Then Russ jumped out of
the boat and slit its throat.
I felt happy and proud after we
caught that moose because it was my first moose. While we were
carving it up Garrett went to check if Charlie was at Leslie's cabin.
But he wasn't.
We caught our moose around 10:00 P.M.
and finished butchering it around 11:30 P.M. After that we went back
to camp and slept. The next day when we got home I passed out my
share of the moose to the elders. Next year, though, I get to keep
it."
