Nick Isaac
Bilingual Teacher
Nick Isaac ws born in Bethel, Alaska, in 1956. He grew up
in Ohogamiut, Marshall, and Akiachak. He attended high
school in Eagle River and graduated in Bethel in 1975. He
took college courses during his Junior year in high school
and also studied by teleconference. He later took other
college courses but did not finish college.
He started working as a Bilingual teacher in 1990 and
plans to work here as long as he can. Nick really likes his
job because he says that every day is different and that he
likes teaching the Yup'ik language and culture. He first
became interested in teaching when he found out what the
Yup'ik teacher did. Before he got his job he had to know how
to read and write Yup'ik. Since starting to teach he has
attended many workshops and in-services where he has learned
new techniques in teaching and about the different learning
styles of Yup'ik students.
He feels that his job keeps him very stimulated because
he has to plan and prepare lessons and be ready for the kids
every day. Nick says the best thing about his job is hearing
kids learn their Yup'ik language. The worst thing is when he
gets behind in his paperwork. Other than that everything is
okay.

Nick Duny
Maintenance
Nick was born in Bethel on the 17th of October, 1961. He
grew up in Marshall. Nick went to school in Marshall during
his elementary years, then went to high school in Emmonak
for three years and graduated in Marshall.
He has worked at the school for eight months now and
plans to work for about 20 more years. He likes his job
because there is always something to do most of the time. It
is always different and not the same every day. Nick was
interested in working here because he would have something
to do and keep him busy throughout the year.
Nick got all his training in plumbing, electical, boiler
repair and installation before he started working with the
school. And he gets on-the-job training and hands- on
experience as he works from day to day.
His job keeps him busy since he has to keep the school
and the teacher housing warm and the water and sewer system
working. The best thing he likes about his job is the
different things he works on every day. The worst is when
the weather is cold and he has to work outside.
Nick has a family of two, his wife Debbie and daughter,
Irene. On work days he says that he can't wait until the day
is over so he can go home and be with his family.
