Thomas K. Papp's Summer Vacation
"Since January I've been down in
Fort Simcoe, Washington, with the Job Corps. For two months I took
Carpentry and then switched over to Heavy Equipment Repair (H.E.R.).
It's the number one trade available there. I've been keeping busy
there having a lot of fun with Crimet and other new friends. Crimet
is also in H.E.R."
"In July, I came to Marshall for a
home leave. Crimet and I got here on the 26th of July. We had a lot
of fun in Marshall, seeing friends and family once again. While I was
here this summer, I went on boat rides and rode around to town with
4-wheelers. I mostly hung around town and talked to people. Then I
left back to Washington to continue training. In Anchorage I stayed
at Russell Lake's place a couple of days before leaving for Seattle.
I spent my birthday in Anchorage on the day Mt. Spurr blew. That day
ash started to fall over Anchorage. Before the ash fell on Anchorage,
a deadly-looking black cloud started coming in our direction. It
looked cool, something I'd never seen before. The next day, a couple
inches of ash covered Anchorage and turned the city upside down.
Planes couldn't come in or out of Anchorage International Airport so
I was stranded for a couple of days."
Then Russell told me that my
brother-in-law Art Fitka had passedaway. So I had to come back to
Marshall for the funeral. I once again spent time with my family and
friends before leaving Marshall for sure. This time I stayed here for
ten days and left on the 24th of August. I didn't want to leave
Marshall, but I had to. My summer was fun, but short. Though when I
return to Washington, it'll still be summer for a little while
longer. My vacation was alright and I'll be back in February of
'93."
