"Qigeckalleq Pellullermeng"
"A Glimpse of the Past"

INTRODUCTION

The following stories were collected by students of the Upward Bound Program at Hooper Bay High School. It has been a project undertaken with considerable difficulty both in the actual collection of the stories and most especially in their translation from the original Yup'ik to English. Anyone who has studied Yup'ik will understand the effort involved since the structure of the language is so entirely different from that of English.

In presenting this small work we hope young people in the area will gain a greater appreciation of the way of life of their grandparents and a continuing respect for the Yup'ik culture.

Publication of "Qigeckalleq Pelluflermeng" has been made possible in part by a grant from the Alaska State Council of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency in Washington, D.C.
