One Hilarious
Summer
"This summer Everett, Bev, Carlene,
and I tried to go down river to St. Mary's for the Fiddle Fest. When
we were right across from Takchak our engine gave up on us and we had
to paddle to the river bank where we landed the boat and tried to fix
our problem. We started telling stories, and somewhere along the line
we all got hungry. So Everett took the two ducks he'd just caught and
told Carlene and me to pluck them. We went over to the trees to pluck
them, but we got scared when we heard some branches break, and we
went back by the fire. When we were finished, Everett cut them up and
took out the guts, then he cooked them over the open fire till they
were very black. They looked ugly, but we had no choice because we
had nothing else to eat. When we took off the burnt parts, though,
the meat tasted really good. After we ate we were really hyper and
Carlene started acting really weird and making us laugh hilariously.
Not too long afterward we saw Alvin Owletuck driving by in his boat
and we waved him down. He brought us back to Marshall, and as soon as
I got here I ate and fell asleep."
