Thirty-five
Dollars
"This summer I enjoyed the boat rides
to the sandbar. On July 10th I joined about twenty other kids who
went over to the sandbar right across from Marshall. We were
chaperoned by two Campfire Instructors from Fairbanks. I hung out all
night there with my friends Diane, John Thomas, Morgan, Carlie,
Carlene, Jolene, Jenetta and Aaron. If we weren't chatting in the
tent, we were swimming or warming up by the fire. It was fun on the
first day we were there because Rose, Richard and Girlie came by the
sandbar and swam and talked with us until 5:00 A.M.
I also participated in the city
clean-up. I picked about 35 bags of trash in three days. I was
getting paid one dollar a bag and earned about $35.00. The day after
the last day of picking up trash I attended the picnic at the airport
sponsored by the city. There I received my $35.00, ate a hamburger
and played lap game.
On the 8th of August I felt the urge
to pick berries for my mom. I found a three gallon bucket, grabbed
some snacks, and headed up to the tundra around the new airport road.
About an hour and a half later, I got tired of being bitten by bugs,
so I picked up my half-filled bucket and started to walk home. When I
looked back at where I was squatting and saw mosquitoes and gnats
following me, I started to run. I ran until I reached the Armory.
There I hid from the bugs for a while. After resting and munching
down I walked home."
