Curriculum Resources for the Alaskan Environment

Subject Areas: all

Timeline: one evening/repeated

Grade Levels: K-12

Purpose: to open the school to the community; to provide recreational programs in villages with limited recreational facilities

  • Set aside one night per week for recreation night.
  • Have the students select activities and games:
  • card games
    bingo; math and word bingo
    scrabble; monopoly
    ping pong; shuffleboard
    checkers; chess.

  • Have students advertise, set up, and manage the affair.

Variations

  • Use the activity for fund-raising: charge admission and sell refreshments.
  • Include model building; other construction (i.e., sleds, cabins, caches, snowshoes, canoes, etc.).
  • Use JOM funds or raise funds:

    to provide supervisors and coordinators for after school and evening basketball

    to provide library aide to run the library; open it to the public after school and evenings.
